In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
